Bacteria and Enzyme Soil Cleaning and Remediating Agent for all Hydrocarbon, Oil, Petrol, and Diesel Spills in South Africa

Incredibly cost effective, low pricing for bacterial and enzymatic treatment and cleaning of Oil, Diesel, Petrol and Hydrocarbon Spills in South Africa.

Afrizymes eco friendly bacteria, enzyme and microbe bio chemical technology is based on biology and involves the use of living micro organisms to make eco friendly products. Living micro organisms grow and produce enzymes, its derivatives and other related matter for use in various industries. These bio products have a wide range of applications including medicine, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, food, fertilizer, aquaculture, textile, brewing, tanning, pulp and paper, environmental and waste water treatment, oil spill cleaning and even household and institutional maintenance. Bio enzyme and bacterial microbe technology draw on biological sciences including genetics, microbiology, animal cell culture, molecular biology, bio-chemistry, embryology, cell biology, ecology and often involves eco friendly chemical engineering, and bio-engineering.

The most cost effective way to clean up all hydrocarbon spills with this potent and natural eco-friendly microbe, bateria and enzyme hydrocarbon soil remediating agent for all oil, diesel, petrol, fuel and hydrocarbon associated spills.

The conventional way of cleaning up oil related spills is to truck or train the affected soil off site for remediation, and then truck new fresh soil in to the affected area. Not only is this an extremely expensive way of doing things, but just consider the massive carbon footprint this has in terms of double transport, labour, and then at the end of the day you are just moving the affected soil to another place. It still then needs to be remediated and the planet is still sitting with the problem. This is just a case of “out of site, out of mind”. Breakthroughs in South African manufacturing techniques have allowed Afrizymes to manufacture a highly effective oil spill cleaning product which can be safely and easily applied on site by the user, with little to no technical knowledge of the subject. The critical thing to note in this instance is that the affected oil spill area can be cleaned an remediated at a fraction of the price! The affected soil no longer has to be transported away. The entire oil spill cleanup process becomes exponentially greener and kinder to the environment.

What is Bio Remediation?

Billions of years ago Mother Nature had already solved the problem of how to keep the Earth clean, naturally. Recent breakthroughs in science and technology have helped us to understand how this is made possible. By using the correct good or beneficial bacteria virtually any dirt build up, stain, odour, septic system, FOG’s (fats, oils, greases) or even hydrocarbon based oil stains can be safely cleaned, bio-degraded and removed quicker and more cost effectively than traditional harmful chemicals.

Bioremediation refers to any method that uses microbes (micro organisms) to recycle organic materials and sequester inorganic ions. Because the primary responsibility of microbes is to recycle organic materials, they must be present in sufficient quantities and diversity in order to do this. Under carefully controlled conditions, bioremediation can be a practical and cost effective method to remove hydrocarbons and other organics from contaminated surfaces and sub-surfaces. Bioremediation cleans up the environment by allowing living organisms to degrade or transform hazardous organic contaminants using natural biology.

Augmentation or Stimulation

Bio-Augmentation is the addition of naturally occurring microbes, enzymes and bacteria and to sites and is the quickest and best way to clean up oil, diesel, petroleum – basically all hydrocarbon type contaminated sites. Bio-Stimulation is the modification of sites to enhance the growth of indigenous microbes already present. It may also clean up a site, but at a greater cost and much more time. This method is commonly used for open water oil spill response and exposes marine life to more harm than Bio-Augmentation.

Essential Requirements:

Under optimal conditions, a single microbe can divide every 20-30 minutes and will live as long as conditions exist within a range of 30 to 90 days. Once these conditions are no longer present, the microbes will die off, be eaten by other microorganisms, or become dormant.

Operating Conditions:

  1. Needs a food source to be present and available.
  2. Takes place at the oil/water interface.
  3. Activity is limited by oxygen (a residual of 1 ppm or more)
  4. Requires inorganic nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium nutrients.
  5. One microbe can utilize one cell weight of carbon per hour.
  6. The water used to activate microbes can be either fresh or salt water.
  7. It is an enzymatic process, wherein various enzymes effectively “cutup” the microbes and;
  8. Directly related to the number of microbes present.
  9. It is a transformation instead transportation.
  10. The greater the surface area the faster the microbes work.

Process:

In order to have hyper-degradation (faster than normal) occur there must be a minimum of 1,000,000 oil degrading microbes per gram of contaminant to override the indigenous population of microbes. Anything less and the bioremediation process becomes very slow, the more hydrocarbon degrading microbes present at the site of the spill, the faster and more efficient the remediation process.

The only lab test required is a simple, quick, and inexpensive biocompatibility test to determine if there are any substances present that would be toxic to the microbes, thus preventing them from doing their job. Once a site is inoculated, the microbes quickly adapt to their new environment and begin the break-down of the pollutant. The speed with which this occurs is relative to the density of the needed microbe population. The microbial product is a consortium of billions hydrocarbon digesting microbes in various carriers, and since growth of the microbes is exponential, the pollutant is quickly and efficiently degraded, resulting in a faster treatment or closure.

As in all products, water and oxygen must be present to allow the microbes to break down organic waste into carbon dioxide, water, and soluble fatty acids. Fatty acids are a water soluble food for fish and plants.

Ecozyme microbial products (“microbes”) are a consortium of naturally occurring communities of aerobic and micro-aerophilic microorganisms single cells ranging in size from 1 to 10 microns. When activated by water, they provide our customers the opportunity to activate the microbes at their convenience. Because microbes are living assemblage, it must be understood that they can be destroyed by caustics, high concentrations of chlorine, some solvents, and chemicals. X-raying the microbes will kill and destroy them.

Ecozyme microbes employ the concept of aerobic co-metabolism by using multiple strains of microorganisms. Other conditions must be taken into account, such as ph, temperature, salinity, type of contaminant, etc.

Health & Safety:

  • Ecozyme microbes are collected from naturally occurring sources.
  • Potential pathogens to man, animals, or plants are excluded by the cultivation of our microbes in a proprietary process.
  • Our microbes are routinely analyzed for dangerous and toxic microorganisms, and are human, animal and plant pathogen free.
  • Extensive laboratory and field tests have documented the efficiency, safety, and reliability of the products.

Application:

This product is ideally applied at a minimum rate of 0,1% per cubic meter of affected soil. In other words for 1 cubic meter of soil, initially apply 1Kg of powdered product. For weekly follow up treatment apply 1L of liquid product per 1 cubic meter of soil. Increase application ratio according to severity of the affected area.

Take before, during and after soil TPH (Total Petroleum Hydrocarbon) readings in order to quantify and achieve the desired reduction in results. The amount of treatment time and product applied depends on the severity of the spill and on the desired results wished to be achieved.

  1. The initial shock dose of Ecozyme Oil Remediator Powder product needs to be ploughed or shovelled into the soil to below the affected layer of soil.
  2. Cover the treated area with plastic sheeting to prevent moisture loss (in South African Autumn / Winter months. Not necessary in Spring / Summer months).
  3. Keep the soil moist, water manually with regular tap water when required.
  4. Once per week after initial dose evenly add Ecozyme Oil Remediator Liquid in a pressure sprayer onto the affected area. Plough or turn over soil after being applied.
  5. For best results initially add a quality soil fertilizer (one rich in macro and micro nutrients) which acts as a bio-stimulant.
  6. Continue this procedure for up to 60 days, or discontinue when the desired TPH soil readings are achieved.
  7. Air tubes inserted into the ground for deeper contamination will accelerate rate of bioremediation.

The best defense against oil spills is billions of microscopic hydrocarbon chewing microbes. The primary motive for additionally using bio surfactants where required is to break the oil into smaller droplets that bacteria can more easily consume. If the oil is in very small droplets, microbial degradation is much quicker. The dispersants can also stimulate microbial growth. Bacteria will chew on the dispersants as well as the oil. For decades scientists have pursued genetic modifications that might enhance these microbes’ ability to chew up oil spills, whether on land or sea. The natural world is replete with a host of organisms that combine as a community to decompose oil. Bacteria and fungi use the hydrocarbons as fuel and emit the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide (CO2) as a result. In essence, the microbes break down the ring structures of the hydrocarbons in seaborne and land oil spills using enzymes and oxygen in the seawater. The end result is ancient oil turned into modern day bacterial biomass — populations can grow exponentially in days. It is possible to add fertilizers, such as iron, nitrogen and phosphorus, to stimulate the growth of such bacteria, an approach used to speed up microbial activity. This will see a three to five times increase in rate of biodegradation in the right environment.

Afrizymes oil spill cleanup products are a multi-culture concentrate available in liquid and powder form. They are made up if multiple strain microbial cultures and enzymes designed to bioremediate almost all fractions of crude or modified petroleum products and paraffin wax. They are also effective on animal and vegetable oils and fats. Powerful bio surfactants are available which break the hydrocarbons into minute molecules. The microbes then attach themselves to the contaminants and reduce them to carbon dioxide and water. The microbial cultures continue enzyme production until all oil contaminants and other organic wastes are consumed. The Afrizymes hydrocarbon cleaning solution is non-toxic, non-caustic, non-corrosive, non-pathogenic, harmless and is completely biodegradable.

They are strong enough to remove heavy build-up of oil, grease and grime from the toughest industrial cleaning tasks without the risks that conventional cleaners cause. Ecozyme oil cleaners are all-natural botanically-blended enzymatic system which is coupled with multiple strains of microbes that accelerates the digestion of hydrocarbons in surface washing applications. Microbes convert hydrocarbons enzymatically prior to the ingestion of the organic material. It breaks down macroscopic clumps of hydrocarbons into smaller molecules and increases the surface area of the molecules making them more water- soluble. The microbes use a process of extracellular and intracellular enzyme production in which enzymes are excreted from the microbial cell. The microbes secrete various enzymes that begin the process of cleavage and digestion of the hydrocarbons. The resulting by-products are carbon dioxide and water. Once the reaction is complete, the microbes and enzymes break free and attach to another chain of hydrocarbons in order to repeat the same process. . The microbes used in our products are completely safe, non- pathogenic and have no recognized hazard potential under normal operating conditions.
